Album of the week

Chris Brown – BROWN (The Chocolate Edition)

Black vinyl record with a cream Chris Brown – BROWN (The Chocolate Edition) label on a textured chocolate-brown background.

Sometimes, an album needs a second chance.

The Chocolate Edition was released on 19 June 2026.

To be honest, the original BROWN did not really connect with me. Perhaps it was too long for me; perhaps I simply could not find my way into it.

Then came the newly released Chocolate Edition, with ten new songs at the beginning, and they are brilliant.

What has always fascinated me about him is that he moves through a melody as he sings it. His voice sometimes seems almost acrobatic: small runs, unexpected turns, rhythmic shifts, harmonies and details you often notice only on a second listen. He moves with the beat rather than singing above it.

With 37 songs, this version is very extensive too. But those ten new pieces at the beginning give me exactly the way in that I did not find with the original release.

The record immediately makes you want to snap your fingers along. You hear an artist who, after more than 20 years in music, knows exactly what he can do with his voice.

What stays with me

An album gets a second chance

For me, this version of the album works much better than the original release.
