Fink – Wheels Turn Beneath My Feet

Black vinyl record with a handwritten Fink label and Wheels Turn Beneath My Feet lettering on a textured brown background.

There are albums you listen to, and there are albums you find yourself inside.

Wheels Turn Beneath My Feet was released in 2012.

For me, this live album belongs firmly in the second category.

Fink, whose real name is Fin Greenall, originally comes from England and now lives in Berlin, where much of his music is created.

Voice, guitar and space

He started out in the late 1990s as a DJ and producer in the electronic scene. Only later did he reinvent himself completely, moving towards the stripped-back sound of voice, guitar and space for which he is known today.

And then there is that voice. So present. So close. Almost as though he were playing directly for himself, rather than for an audience.

Everything around him stays restrained. Nothing pushes itself to the front.

And it is in precisely that space that everything happens.

That mixture of voice, atmosphere and this slightly floating, almost hypnotic sound is what makes this record so special to me.

Alongside RY X’s Live from the Royal Albert Hall, I consider it one of the best live recordings of all.

And I am probably not alone in that.

When I was looking for the vinyl edition back then, I came across offers as high as €1,300. Those were asking prices, but I still found them quite astonishing.

A recording that draws you in

I suspect that the album’s exceptional recording quality is part of the reason. It is regularly used at high-end demonstrations because it shows what a system can really do.

The song Trouble’s What You’re In is a perfect example.

And the interesting thing is that although you can put this album on in the background, that does not work for long. At some point, you realise it is drawing you in. You automatically slow down, sit down and really listen.

What stays with me

A recording that draws me in

That makes me all the more excited to experience it myself on 18 October at the Muffathalle in Munich. Not through headphones. Not through a hi-fi system. But directly.
