Album of the week

Brent Faiyaz – Icon, including world is yours.

Black vinyl record with a cream Brent Faiyaz – Icon label on an abstract cream, navy and rust-coloured background.

Brent Faiyaz comes from Maryland in the United States and has been one of the defining voices in modern R&B for several years. He first became known through the collective Sonder and the Grammy-nominated track Crew. Since then, he has consistently followed his own path, with considerable artistic control and a clear sonic identity.

Icon was released on 13 February 2026.

His newly released album Icon, which also includes world is yours., feels to me like a new, modernised form of soul.

The beats are spare and often very quiet. Lots of space, little clutter. Some passages even feel a little offbeat or unfamiliar. But that is precisely what makes it interesting.

His voice is at the centre of it all. Warm and soulful, but without grand drama. He uses it very deliberately: controlled, without being loud or exaggerated. That gives the songs their grounding and depth.

This album lives through mood, space and the way he uses his voice, with little reliance on big effects.

What stays with me

An album to open yourself up to

Every song takes its own time to connect. You have to open yourself up to it, but then the album becomes really interesting.
